Ken .... I have read about the well slide/Vaseline method but have never actually tried it. I kinda like the larger size and ready-made aspect of this item. (Of course, having arthritis determines how you perceive a lot of things.) In any event, I’ll probably spring for a couple of these and let the...

Neat little gadget

Here’s a little something for my fellow beginners who might be on the lookout for something different (and low tech) to try. It’s a micro-aquarium from Carolina Biological Supply. The chamber that holds the specimens can be removed from its stand and placed directly on the microscope stage so that y...

Gary,

Sounds like fun. Maybe you could pick up two bottles and FAX a pint or so to me.

Oh my … oh my … oh my. I might be hooked; I know I’m excited. I have always considered inverts to be much more interesting than boney creatures and I’ve already got an idle 10-gallon tank (just the tank). How can I possibly resist? I’m curious, Piotr, what do you do about filtration? I wouldn’t want...

Thanks for the responses to my oil immersion question, and don’t worry about giving too much info. I can always ignore (or save) what I don’t need. Incidentally, the Ward cleaner appears to contain mostly Isopropyl Alcohol and makes no mention of Xylol, Also, Ken, thanks for the link to Piotr’s supe...

Ken … Thanks for your reponse and the link to the Micscape article. I printed it off and will give it a good read tomorrow. I am at that “awkward age” for a microscopist with between 1 & 2 years under my belt so I’ve got questions that go all over the place. I’ll try my best to keep them in the righ...

Marine micro-life

Ken ... First of all, thanks for taking on the task of moderating this forum. I don’t know if this is appropriate or not … I am hoping that your intended subject matter includes not only the mechanics of operating a microscope, but the finding and preparation of subjects as well (a bit of a problem ...

Has microscopys time passed? I really do not think so. Ken … I didn’t mean to imply that microscopy itself was outmoded. I was speaking in terms of a cooperative organization of microscopists. People these days don’t seem to have the same attraction to such things. In addition to astronomy and natu...

Maybe it is our society these days Bill. You know what? You just may have hit the nail on the head. I’m a bit of a throwback. I consider myself to be an amateur naturalist; when was the last time you heard that one? A hundred years ago it was a noble pastime for a gentleman. Now, the closest thing ...

This has occurred to me too, and it is certainly a valid factor; but I haven’t decided if it is a major factor. I participate in a Bird FeederWatch program for Cornell University. The birds I see and report on are not the exact same birds that others watch, and yet we all contribute to a common pool...

I bumped into this very situation (mostly the lack of human contact) when I renewed my interest in the micro world about a year or so ago. I have long been active in several astronomical organizations so when I finally acquired a “real” microscope I began searching for equivalent micro-groups and fo...

 Whooooa!

I usually sit back and quietly enjoy the view your folks provide, but every once in a while I can’t do the “quietly” part. This is one of those times. This is a truly amazing shot. I’ve got to crank up my 100x objective the next time I have a Vorticella.

My goodness!

Fleas please

Although I can’t contribute any suitably high quality images to this group I would like to share an interesting article on one of our favorite subjects, water fleas. I hope this isn’t considered too OT since it does not really involve amateur imaging. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/12/051...

Great images, Charlie. There's more going on here than just the use of HF. You do good stuff.

If you folks heard me laughing. I apologize. I was still grinning from having a look at Charlie's peritrich twins (which for some strange reason I found to be comical) when I saw Sponge Bob and almost fell off my chair. I'll try to behave myself in the future.
