Yes lighting is a fascinating subject. I dont really get the time to play with macro much these days and am lured by by digi camera phone, did you see my posting on a cactus stem macro? Excellent macros, and nce set up! I have a canon SLR(film) but couldnt afford their macro lens and flash but luckily someone kindly donated a Cosina 100mm macro and I later bought a TTL of camera flash unit.

The only thing i would add is when going ultra close(macro) a small light source,e.g. a flashgun needs diffusing as it acts as a very large light source and is very contrasty.A similar scenario is a very sunny day where the light appears as very contrasty and should be diffused.
