I'm 'lichen' it...

It's been 'lichen week' in the macro forum so how about in this one too :) These are photos of a common lichen in our area. It attaches itself to fences, signs, window sills, pretty well anything. First image FOV is 9mm, the others are about 4mm. Photo taken with Sony DSC-P150 through eyepiece of Ol...

Not a lichen for lichen-week...

From the cool start on Saturday...mice, er oss, er ice on moss! FOV about 10cm. http://www.crocoite.com/images/moss-n-ice.jpg Interestingly, a friend of mine who lives about 8km away reported ice crystals on his dam that were one and a half metres long! Horizontal, not vertical though. Sure was a 8)...

Are these formations common where you live? Hi Rik. The normal occurrence here is the acicular (needle-like) crystals. The ones in your links and my second photo, are not the norm. However, having said that, ice is a recognised mineral and has a defined crystal structure. It is hexagonal (as you ma...

Really cool shots Steve. Looks like there are a lot of big hairy spiders where you live  Does it only have four eyes? Do all spiders have eight eyes? Thanks Doug. It does have 8 eyes. There are 4 small ones just above the palps, below and between the two front eyes. They are harder to see, b...

We have lots, an really good air too, so that could be right.

Tasmanian lichens...

Taken on Saturday, same area as epacris. The first is about 5" FOV, the second double that. Both are living in the forest litter amongst gum leaves. Can't determine the species but I think they are commonly known as 'coral lichens'. There are apparently over 200 species of lichen in Tasmanian rainfo...

At one time it was believed that Grass Snakes actually reproduced via spontaneous generation; that is, springing as miniature snakelings directly from the grass in which they lived! Maybe a reference to those snakes that give birth to live snakelets rather than eggs? Nice photo BTW Ken - lovely col...
