We are patiently waiting for the Botanical Garden Opening, Wim! ;-) GREAT!!! images! This sequence looks really dramatic when watched under a microscope. Litonotus is a pretty nasty creature! I captured a similar sequence of pictures a few years ago (but its quality is much inferior). Sometimes the ...

Disematostoma

Here is a (not very good) picture of Disematostoma , a ciliate related to Frontonia and Paramecium . The organism was about 150 um long. It resembles Frontonia , but it is tapered at the posterior end. http://www.droplet-microscopy.org/gallery/disematostoma/disematostoma1.jpg 25x/0.65 objective, Son...

(sorry for reviving the old thread)

My guess for the second picture is Nassula (or a related specimen). One can easily see a conspicious cyrtos ("cytopharyngeal basket") supporting a mouth opening.

As for the first specimen, I don't have a clue...

Interesting research

A new member joined the Microscopy Webring ( http://www.pirx.com/microscopy ) - Professor Chris Lobban from University of Guam. Prof. Lobban's research is related to marine algae and protists. Quite recently, his group discovered a new genus of marine ciliate related to Stentor named Maristentor . T...

Very unusual shape, Ken. I guess "vesparium" has something to do with a wasp (Vespula), since the organism's shape remains a wasp nest. Excellent pictures!

Amazing shot, Charlie. It is difficult to take a decent picture like this via aquarium glass. A few months ago I took a picture of the very same sea dragon, I think. Too bad I didn't know you were arriving to San Diego, although I was out of town for past three weeks...

Beautiful picture, Wim. It's one of my favourite protozoans, too. It is amazing to watch it spinning with all colorful organella inside. It looks like a living jewel.
