Very interesting Rik! Some subjects were made for video it would seem.

End of the road (leaf!)

I followed this little critter around tonight until it got too dark to focus. It would crawl to the end of a leaf and then reach out looking for another. This time there was nothing there.

Steve.... when I got mine I didn't know it was a phase objective (didn't really want phase) ... wasn't familiar enough with the odd (for me) designations on the objective. Without working up a phase insert, I have no way to use it in phase. It does not match up with any annulus I have now. (No issue...

Hi Rik, I hope that bungee cord isn't there to prevent the illuminator from vibrating itself off of the platform  Nicely done. I have never thought of exploring the "clicking" mechanism now that I have the capability of doing so... although as a kid I certainly annoyed plenty of click beetles ...

Thomas... I also think that a dealer recommending only a 50 watt illuminator because of the number of elements in an objective is bogus. (Although it is nice to have with phase contrast and polarization techniques). Meiji is a very reputable company, better known for their stereo scopes rather than ...

You're going to get a variety of opinions on this one! In the books I have read I have seen opinions coming down on both sides. From what I have gathered, the majority opinion in the various microscope groups is that you can. Sometimes it is mentioned that contrast is somewhat lower. My experience h...

The eggs hatched!

This afternoon I looked into the jar where I had placed the egg cluster I posted last week.... http://www.photomacrography1.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5018 ... and I noticed they had just about all hatched out. They appear to be a species of shield bug. They had all crawled to the edge of the egg clu...

Piotr... these are the first two shots using it, and yes, it really seems to be the right "strength" if you want to record the view through 10X eyepieces. My eyepieces show me a FN of 20, and with the 1.67 NFK and Rebel 350D I record a field of 16... so it's nice in that respect. But there's always ...

Thanks all! Actually the flies I have collected to be my vict.... uhhh, I mean subjects  have been remarkably clean. I catch them live in a clean container. After they are mounted and ready to photograph a few light "puffs" from some canned air takes care of most problems. If there are any fin...

Another (hairy!) fly

A couple more fly shots. I've been playing around with some different lighting... trying something less diffuse and with higher contrast. But so far I still like the "look" provided by the more diffused lighting as was used for these two pictures. Top image from stack of 35 images, Helicon Focus. 2....

Greetings Thomas You are aiming high  . Since the work you are referencing is being done at Stanford, you can imagine that they are working with some of the the best equipment available. If you look at the research papers they have posted (in PDF format) some of them give a brief description o...

Damselfly lookin' right at ya! Unknown beetle.

Here's a damselfly "head shot", and a close image of the eye facets. The beetle at the bottom was found among blackbery flowers, but no ID. http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/7678_6700sma.jpg http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/_MG_6758sm.jpg http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/ukbeet.j...

Egg cluster

Don't know what critter is inside (but I expect they'll hatch out fairly soon and I'll have some idea). Top two were taken outdoors in bright sunshine. The last image is actually done on a microscope with a low power objective. Top two: Canon 5D, 65mm MP-E macro. 13 images and 12 images respectively...
