Two very good images. Does anyone know what causes the "rainbow" colours to appear in the reflections on wings. Have seen this several times before on my own pictures. Is it because the wing surface is two layers of chitin that when fused together form an upper and lower surface, and difraction of t...

That is a couple of very nice rear wing patches.
Like this picture more than the previous one, which is more rigid with the vertical body axis.
Wonder what genus this is, will try and look it up...

I think mowse's speculations might be right.
Maybe the ant's furiously use of it's stinger is a reflective behaviour when in trouble, even when there's nothing to sting.

That is some really nice pictures, beautiful colours. I'm pretty sure this can only be one species, Variegated Meadowhawk (Sympetrum corruptum). Some species look a bit similar, but black markings on 8th and 9th abdominal segment is not seen on those. Looking at pictures, I do not think anything com...

Both images are really nice.
The butterflypicture is composed as I like it most, and with a nice background.
Can only copy Kens view on the second one, great surroundings for the bug.

I saw your other post on this flash-subject but haven't replied in threads for a while. I must say this is quite interesting.
A really nice and sharp photo you got here, whitout the flash disturbing :-)
must look into stuff like that myself next year or so.

best regards

Dragonfly death

Winter is getting closer here in Denmark, and this night some places actually had freezing temperatures. We have had the most wonderfull weather the last three weeks or so, making me go out and photograph at least once in the weekends. I stumbled over some dragonflies caught in the water surface and...

Great photo, nice composition, sharpness and lovely background in my opinion. Maybe a bit more air above antenna would please me, although it would move the grasshoppers eye away from golden section.

Cicada tourist style

This is one of three photos I took of a cicada. I did not even know what I photographed, and has only been told afterwards :-) Some of these were flying around between bushes in a desert enviroment, perching most of the time. They really looked cool when flying and their wing sounded funny when doin...

Nice photo of a very different coloured bee, never seen anything like that before. Nice to see the bright flowers aren't blown out.
Beautiful eye that one got.

That's a really good picture, like the way the background/surroundings are split in two. Nice details on the fly.

Why are flies blowing bubbles ? Saw that this sunday :-)

Re: If it is still Cicada Week...Here I am at your attention

A really nice angle on this insect, makes the eyes and the distance between them highly visible.

If I'm not mistaken I see an insect at the bottom picture :-)

This is nice beautiful photographs, but it disturbs a bit that there isn't a line between them.

The top picture has a lot of DOF, you managed to get both the front and rear part sharp.

A very nice picture -- even caught the front & back wings in different parts of their cycles! --Rik Well the 180 degree phase difference between front and rear wings, shows that the dragonfly is hovering, standing still. In foreward flight the rear wings leads the front wings by a 90 degree phase. ...

Yes, I'm not sure if my flash (the new sigma 140 macroflash) will be powerfull enough at distance. But maybe it would be possible at 1-1,5 meter (3-5 feet) distance, which is kind of the distance one can hope to shoot large dragonflies in flight. I guess the problem is that the distance varies all t...
