Two very good images. Does anyone know what causes the "rainbow" colours to appear in the reflections on wings. Have seen this several times before on my own pictures. Is it because the wing surface is two layers of chitin that when fused together form an upper and lower surface, and difraction of t...

That is some really nice pictures, beautiful colours. I'm pretty sure this can only be one species, Variegated Meadowhawk (Sympetrum corruptum). Some species look a bit similar, but black markings on 8th and 9th abdominal segment is not seen on those. Looking at pictures, I do not think anything com...

Dragonfly death
Winter is getting closer here in Denmark, and this night some places actually had freezing temperatures. We have had the most wonderfull weather the last three weeks or so, making me go out and photograph at least once in the weekends. I stumbled over some dragonflies caught in the water surface and...

Cicada tourist style
This is one of three photos I took of a cicada. I did not even know what I photographed, and has only been told afterwards :-) Some of these were flying around between bushes in a desert enviroment, perching most of the time. They really looked cool when flying and their wing sounded funny when doin...

A really nice angle on this insect, makes the eyes and the distance between them highly visible.

A very nice picture -- even caught the front & back wings in different parts of their cycles! --Rik Well the 180 degree phase difference between front and rear wings, shows that the dragonfly is hovering, standing still. In foreward flight the rear wings leads the front wings by a 90 degree phase. ...

Yes, I'm not sure if my flash (the new sigma 140 macroflash) will be powerfull enough at distance. But maybe it would be possible at 1-1,5 meter (3-5 feet) distance, which is kind of the distance one can hope to shoot large dragonflies in flight. I guess the problem is that the distance varies all t...
