Hello Rik,
Yes, Vlinder is a word only used for Lepidopterans. It would be a good word. Better than butterflies because what do they have to do with butter?

Thanks! It could indeed be to attract mates. It is probably a bit like a peacock. There is a theory that says that when a male has such features and can still avoid being eaten by predators it is a prove of strength, so good genes! Does that make sense? It should indeed be moth. Thanks for the I.D! ...

Thanks friends! I think it looks a bit like the Abominable snow-fly! It was done with a 105 mm. sigma macro objective as close as I could get so the 1 to 1 with the smaller than 35mm Nikon sensor. And I used a ring for some extra magnification. The insect is not much begger than a centimeter. f-stop...

Nice image! But why are you all so negative about spiders??? Spiders are great! I once wrote a little article about this daddy long legs spider (sorry for the self promotion: http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/spider/pholcus1.html ) And this one is pretty interesting. How they hold their egg packag...

This is a small butterfly of the genus Adela. I am not sure about the species.

silvery fly
This is a fly I sometimes find when I go on a walk through the sand dunes. It is small with silvery hairs and called Thereva annulata. I am trying to find a compromise between resolution and depth of field. I'll included a cropped detail of the same image with the smallest details. Wim http://www.ph...

Welcome to the Forum, Steve! It looks like a drone fly! We have them here in the Netherlands (Do you call that Up above or Down under:) as well. Probably not the same species but they look very similar. They look like bees but it is mimicry. Many drone and hover flies mimic stinging insects to avoid...

Carrion Beetle
This is a beetle I had never seen before. It is a Carrion beetle. It was posing on this little heap of dung and after I photographed it twice it flew away. I was lucky to capture that moment. The focus layer of teh second image is slightly too far but for a small image on the web it is no problem. F...

I have been doing some macro images when I visited a friend on the other side of the country. (2 hours from my place, yes, it is a small country:-) the results where pretty o.k. but in some cases it was too much flash. I am not trying to make a reflection screen on my macro lens. But this is somethi...

There is not reason to be unhappy about these results, Tom, They look very nice. Nice composition and colour, and the bees are looking good as well! Intersting thoughts about the flash. I will try to use a bit more natural light myself. I have been doing some macro but I am not satisfied with the li...

Asplanchna with a skinproblem
Ken, I'm away for a couple of days. This is posted tomorrow, o.k? Don't read this post now because otherwise I am exeeding the quota! I found this Asplanchna, a bag-shaped predatory rotifer, completely covered with (probably) fungi. Or it could be rotifer puberty :) The first picture is made with a ...
