For a second or two I thought it had caught and eaten the best part of another insect - nice one Paul.

Hi Ron and Ken - I did have a search and the book shows a fair number of similarly shaped algae, unfortunately they are all drawings so its next to impossible to get the ID without the colour.

Beautiful darkfield shot Charlie. I don't seem to see many of these little fellas, I must look a bit further afield.

Hi Mike, a beautiful job here. I'm amazed that you could get a critter to stay still enough to get in three shots like this, well done M8t.

These are two excellent images Gunn. In this image there does not appear to be an actual connection from spider to ant - is the ant suspended in the spiders web which we cannot see?

Very small flagelate

This measured 12 microns only. The flagellum did not show here but I had seen it under phase contrast. This came from a slide packed with all kinds of different euglenas and I wondered if this also could be a euglena - there is a small reddish patch in the centre. Hi Gerd, I got this sample from a muddy puddle on the edge of a stream. The puddle wouldn't have been much more that a metre in diameter but contained a fair amount of filamentous algae and some green scum. The sample was crammed with all kinds of euglena of different sizes.
