Portrait of a raven

Post by piotr »

I'm not sure if this picture qualifies as a close-up, but I shot it with a macro lens!

A raven in Bryce Canyon National Park. The bird was very cooperative.

I would say that is close-up. He looks like he is trying to be very majestic. I really like this shot. It`s the texture of the feathers which make it way cool IMO.

Beautiful! A bit oversize, perhaps -- 849 pixels?

Oops... I forgot that 800 pixels is a longest side limit, not only width. I replaced it with a rescaled version.

Thanks, Doug and Rik, for your kind words!

Piotr, are you sure on the id? With that hooked beak, it looks more like a bird of prey.

In any case, a very nice pic. The texture of the wings set off the picture. I too have used the Macro lens as a fixed telephoto and works just fine in some cases.

Thank you! :-)

Ken, you might be right. I'm not sure. I'm not a bird expert at all :-)

But perhaps the bird majestic posture is confusing. Here is a couple of other shots of the same bird:

Nice photos. I've photographed ravens at Bryce Canyon too, and was able to get just as close. These birds are amazing, and usually very difficult to get close to.
A kid was nearly able to touch them while moving slowly foreward.
