Wood Tick
I've been on the road all week--One day I picked up a hitchiker.
In the USA, we have several types of ticks, but the most common are the small deer ticks and the larger wood ticks. Deer ticks think I am delicious. Wood ticks think I smell delicious, but for some reason never do bite me. After time in the field, it's not uncommon for me to find one on me wondering where his meal is. And that's what happened one night this week. I took the opportunity to grab some macro shots of him before I sent him down the toilet.
My technique on this shot would have to be the weirdest I've ever used. The tick was on my left forearm (actually crawling around on the hairs there), and I pointed and shot with the camera in my right hand, and had my left shoulder scrunched over to help support the fairly lengthy MP-E-65. I botched some of the shots, but some, such as this one, turned out fine. Using flash-only lighting helped a lot by keeping the shutter speed short. To bring out detail in the tick, I had to overexpose my skin a little bit--I used curves to dim down the skin some, but it is still a little hot here.
