bdelloid rotifer... with a little twist
I know, I know... I really thought I was about through posting bdelloid rotifer "head" shots too. But this one presented a vantage point I had not seen so well before.
This guy showed up on a slide I was examining with phase contrast. Normally I prefer oblique brightfield for this, but I watched a short while. The slide had a lot of water in it, and occasionally the rotifer would "lift" it's head straight up. The top frame show the "side" vantage point that is more "normally" seen. In the bottom frame you are looking straight "down" and can see the two horse-shoe shaped coronae. I think it adds some information that can give a more complete sense of the shape of these rotifers. (The cilia action looks pretty wild in PC too!)

A unique image Charlie. Most of the time we see these animals in a flat or a sideview, seldom do we see them "head on." An excellent shot. Thanks.
