Came across several of these yesterday and today. I had not seen them before. Really beautiful creature. I looked through my books and a bit online but haven't figured it out yet.

Excellent photo Charlie! I ran across one of these a few months back and got some phase pictures. It was much larger and appeared to be recently dead or encysted. However your pictures here are much better than mine. A very interesting creature. I think it is a Meniodium colorless euglenid.

That's incredible!! Does it use the flagella for locomotion, feeding or both? That red eyespot sure makes it look like a euglenoid of some sort.

I'll take a stab at it Charlie. :D Euglena acus, body long spindle, pointed at rear, flagellum one-quarter length of the body length. Paramylum bodies numerous, short rods.

I ran into these too some months back. I think I found them on PIS or Microscope. They are also referenced in Jahns, Phylum Mastigophora, pg. 80, fig. 115C :D

I don't think so Ken. This creature normally was straight as an arrow. It was very slender and colorless... looked like an icicle with an eyespot and a mouth!
