This is a phase image of the ciliate Tintinnidium mucicola. The animal resides in a gelatinous lorica covered with small particles. Tintinnidium belong to the Order Tintinnida which contains more then 900 species, most of which are members of the marine plankton community, with a small number of freshwater representatives. This specimen was taken from a freshwater drainage ditch.
