Two Ants on a Date

Post by S. Alden »

I do believe this is the ant version of a dinner date. If I am correct, the female will take "food" from the male ant when she is being courted

Very nice Sue. The "quality" of the light is great, as is the composition.

I love behavior shots, and I love ant shots!

I think the butts on this one are in great focus, but the heads unfortunately are a little out of the sharp DOF.

Yep, Mike, the heads are abit out of focus, but I posted it anyway since I got excited about two ants at once  . They were moving. She kind of "ate and ran", did not hang around for conversation or anything else for that matter.

I think this could be a lesbian diner 'n dump, considering that there are only female workers in an ant colony. Males are only born just before mating season, and die after they have mated. Also, male ants allmost always have wings, because of the in-flight mating ritual.

This is a grat shot though, it a better version of the one I made when I first started here.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but both male and female ants can have wings or not have them at all, depending on the colony?

not sure about different species, these are normal garden variety black ants if i'm right. The males of this species always have wings, and their only use is procreation.
