Blepharisma

Post by Kenv »

First time I've ever seen one of these pink ciliates, they are quite unmistakeable.

Ken,

Nice discovery of one of the most colorful cilliates! I have worked with them a bunch because I found that my students (6th graders) love the bright color. A few factoids about Blepharisma you might not know.....

There is a regular occurence of giants (>1mm) who than seem to cannabalize smaller "Blephys"

The pink pigment is most pronounced in individuals grown in shade/darkness. Under intense light, Blepharisma loses its color & the breakdown of the pigment proves toxic to individual.

Good work!
