American Postal Microscopical Society

Post by twebster »

Hi y'all :D

My friend and fellow forum/gallery member, Jim Solliday, is the president of the Microscopical Society of Southern California. Here is a copy of a recent email he sent me concerning the formation of an American Postal Microscopical Society. For those of you who may not be familiar with what constitutes a "Postal Society", members of the society mail mounted slides to and from each other. The slides are examined for a few days and then mailed on to the next member on the list. This is a great opportunity to view a large number of different subjects and have your own mounted slides viewed by a large number of members. Usually a journel accompanies each group of slides so that members may write comments about the slides.

I've included the email in it's entirety. If anyone is interested in joining, please contact Alex Cummins at Alexander.Cummins2@verizon.net.

Dear Fellow MSSC Members:

As most of you know, a few years ago some of our members were
involved in the Postal Microscopical Society (PMS). This organization
worked out of the U.K. and provided slides not only for England but
the American Circuit. The Am. circuit was closed as a result of a vote
by the board and we have not had the service of a Postal Society for
about a year and a half. For those of you who might wish to again
participate in such an endeavor you can contact a fellow by the name of
Alex. I have been working with him for a few months on the idea
of starting an American Postal Microscopical Society (APMS). Seems
he is actually beginning the process and has sent out a inquiry with
the intention of establishing interested individuals. The following is
a copy of his message and you can respond according your
interest. If this is something you would not wish to consider, please
just zap this message. That's is for now.

Sincerely, Jim Solliday, Pres (MSSC).

Message from Alex: American Postal Society

I really want this to work. I have a fair selection of material.
So far I have almost no interest. Can anyone help me expand the list.
Without people this will be no fun.
To begin:
1) I need an email of interest in participating, Include:
a. mailing address
b. your microscopic interests
c. type and model of microscope, camera …your basic setup
d. experience level
e. What your main interests are and particular slide wish list.

2) I will provide 10 slides. These will be what I have but I will try to vary it a bit.
3) I will provide a write up for the slides. Each write up will have information about the slide and a place for notes and comments.
4) There will be a routing list enclosed
5) Review the slide ideally 2 weeks but of 4 is nesscary than so be it but the fast we move it the more we see.
6) If possible enclose a slide of your own with a write up ( to be removed when the circuit returns)
7) When completed email me and forward to the next address.
8) For now we will try to do get this started without funds or dues but your participation is important.
9) If we can get a real group going we can expand the size of the circuit and increase the number of circuits circulating
10) I would like to begin soon (beginning of june or july) so please respond as soon as possible.

I will cross post a message similar to this on several microscope groups if you don’t see it
in the next week on yours let me know. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
I may seem a little high handed by just starting like this but I would really like
this to work and the sooner we start the sooner we sill be looking at neat stuff.
Please send all responses to : Alexander.Cummins2@verizon.net
Thanks for your help and consideration
Alex
Best regards to all as always, :D
