Pin Cushion Mystery

Post by micron »

I came across this Acanthocystsis turfacera Heliozoan (“sun animalcules”) in a sample of pond water. This free floating protozoan contains symbiotic zoochlorellae and radiating spicules with basal plates and forked tips (just visible in this phase contrast image).

This certainly does look pin cushiony. It is amazing how many things there are that have a symbiotic relationship with algae. Great image Ron :D
