Sweeet. Your botanical images have really piqued my interest. I have an old microtome that I have never used. I think it is time to dust it off and try my hand at taking some plant cross sections.

Gerd,

These are very nice, and the DIC shows the structures well.

After seeing some of your plant "sections" I went out an got a hand microtome. Definitely need some practice using it though :x

Are you using a small "hand" microtome? If so, what are you using for the blade, and how are you sharpening it?

Hello Charles,
thanks for the compliments. I'm using a small hand microtome and
a 'bigger' microtome as well. I exclusively use disposable blades,
manufactured by leica or feather and appropriate mounts.
So you always get reproducible results cause of the perfect
sharpening of each blade. Some time ago i tried out sectioning with a
normal microtome blade and a razor blade too, with horrible results.
Sharpening never works, so i gave up and finally took disposable blades.....
