Ants are back

The insects begin to emerge here after a long winter. I photographed these ants today. They are some kind of Lasius. Probably Lasius neglectus.

Looks as though love is in the air :o Then again they are ants and no telling what they are doing. A very nice photograph of them just the same though Peter. :D Maybe they are sharing something edible :idea:

Yes, sure Ken. They are both workers (female). They share all food with each other. If some ant is beg for food she will get it from the others. It is called by some the social stomach.

I posted a similiar, but not as good, image last year and was told that is how they pass messages down the worker chain of command - communicate. I never did find time to check that out.
