Seeing Charlie's wonderful shot of tube dwelling diatoms reminded me of some pictures I took a while ago of a marine sample. The diatoms seemed to be in gelatinous strings. I thought you might find these interesting, although not as pretty as Charlie's. The last picture shows a few separate individuals:
