Ken, School and work have kept me too busy to play with my microscope the last couple months but I must commend you on the astounding quality of these photographs. That D200 with the Orion Steady Pix is a sweet combination. I have been using the Steady Pix adapter at the university for photographing...

Sergio, Try the Martin Microscope company at www.martinmicroscope.com. They have been in business since 1946 and have been a longtime distributor for American Optical/ Reichert, along with Wild/Lietz scopes and parts. I still think they have an extensive inventory, and perhaps some the owner's manua...

Tom, Even with 60% cropping it still retains wonderful detail. I have also tried a similar baiting technique but with beer, molassas, and instant mashed potato, live yeast painted on the side of a tree. It attracted butterflies, moths, beetles, wasps, bees, ants. Check it after dark for the moths an...

Ken, I been looking over your recent postings and I must say I am very impressed with the image quality you have achieved with the P200 and SteadyPix. I recently switched over to my Sony F717 and a Martin Microscope adapter that replaces the eyepiece and am a bit disappointed. It seems I got better ...

I think Tom may be right about being a species of Reduviid. The sucking mouthparts, and the 4-segmented antenna certainly fits this family of bugs. However, finding them in moldy leaf litter was totally unexpected. I have not observed the living critter. By the time I retrieved them they were "boca ...

Thanks Rik. This is about as good as it gets with my current set up. Here is a full body shot of the critter in question.

Leaf Litter Denizen

Anyone have a clue what this is? I set up a Berlese funnel to draw out the organisms in a leaf-litter sample and along with an assortment of mites and springtails I found several of these little guys. It is an insect (3 tagma, 3 pr legs), around 1mm in length. Looks like some type of louse with claw...

Nice effect Ken. At first glance I thought you went DIC on us. Love the surface detail.

Thanks Charlie for the informative response. This is all new information to me. My adaptor replaces the eyepiece. I am now prompted to contact the manufacturer (Martin Microscope) and ask about the use of their product in lieu of a compensating eyepiece. I was sold on the MM99 because of the images ...

Thanks Ken and Rick for your informative responses. I guess what I really need to do is more experimenting with different camera modes( aperture priority, speed priority) with different combinations of settings and do some comparative analysis of images of the same subject. That is something that I ...

Improving My Microscopy Technique

I have learned a lot since becoming a regular visitor on this forum. But so far I feel that I am not squeezing the most out of my camera's resolving power when taking stacked images. I know that there are inherent limits of performance with any camera, but I know that my Sony F717 (5 mp) can take so...

Another incredible image! As always I am inspired. Your comments on technique have taught me much. I am obsessed with detail and focus and so far my images have been rather disappointing. 87 images!? Hmmm. Maybe that's where I can improve. Instead of taking quarter-turns on the fine focus knob, perh...

Thanks Charles. Your right about those specular highlights. It can be very frustrating trying to get the lighting just right. I'll try the dome method and see if that doesn't help.

Thanks Rik,
I did download PTLens and played with it some. The changes seem very subtle to me. I guess I don't have an "eye" for it. I have many other images I can experiment with. Thanks!
