Actually we have a very cold and rainy period, Temperatures about 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, and heavy rain every day, it is like rain forest ! We had a rainfall...

Loxodes on closer inspection
Loxodes are ciliates with specific numbers of special vesicles, so called Müller vesicles. The function is still unknown, probably an intracellular gravireceptor. The first image shows the front of a Loxodes magnus (thanks Mr. Ott for the ID) focused on the Müller vesicles. I counted 15 Müller vesic...

Hello Mike, thank you for your comment. Both shots are DIC, but with different condenser prisms and different adjustment of the objective prism. The upper one with less contrast, effect more like brightfield, that's correct. Yes, summer has come this year to Germany without spring. After a cold and ...

Oxytricha sp. (?), binary fission
http://www.online-club.de/~rp11141/mpictures/oxytricha_teil640.jpg I'm always fascinated in watching binary fissions of freshwater ciliates ! This one happened within 15 minutes from my entry upper left to the final division of the ciliates lower right. Identification is a little difficult, maybe O...

Hi Rik, I'm still a beginner in using micropicS, so i can't evaluate the details of this program. The mean reasons for using it are: it is in German language, the author is a friend of mine, it is freeware, there are useful default settings, you can use it with photoshop as you described it for Comb...
