Doug,

The passengers appear to be the same parasites, or a close relative, that commonly inflict damselflies. I believe they are a type of mite. They definitely had legs.

...but they don't fall down

This fat boy was catching a drink in a shady area. I softened the glare through PS to mimic the setting I found him in. Think it turned out well: http://perceptions.smugmug.com/photos/80134006-M.jpg This peculiar guy, who I have never seen before, must be some sort of woodland mass transit. His pass...

Ah, the Peru trip. I leave July 28th for 12 days of fishing/photography/zip-lining in the canopy. I and a buddy are both bringing our 30d's and Sigma 150mm lenses. He has money coming out of his ears and bought a Canon 17-40mm L-series and a 70-200 (or was it 70-300....hmm) 2.8 L-series with telecon...

Thanks for the comments, Rik. I thought it looked mayfly-like, but for some reason I envisioned them as being smaller. I do have another pic of one where the tail is longer and the wings slightly more erect, I wonder if this is a result of a second molting? I would post here, but have already used m...

Piotr, are you sure on the id? With that hooked beak, it looks more like a bird of prey.

In any case, a very nice pic. The texture of the wings set off the picture. I too have used the Macro lens as a fixed telephoto and works just fine in some cases.

This first critter, who I have not identified yet, was a tough chase on a windy day. I finally sang it a song to calm it down enough for a quick pic. http://perceptions.smugmug.com/photos/80134035-M.jpg This next little guy was only about 2 cm long and caught him on a lambs ear. The cushy background...

Hummingbird Clearwing moth

Been after one of these for while, finally caught up with one that would stay still for a tenth of a second. Shot on pink Bee Balm at Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha Nebraska. I must have sat by this Bee Balm for about 90 minutes trying to shoot this guy...tried to prefocus on a flower that I thought he ...

I witnessed a similar display on a milkweed here in Nebraska. Here we have these metallic gold jumping spiders that hang around the milkweed that are hard to photograph due to their reflective properties. I witnessed one spider, and I will assume it is a male, dancing and waving its legs trying to g...

Doug,

I did see the front legs wave around. At first glance it made me think they were a small wasp with those 'antennae'. When I got a closer look, saw they were more fly-like.

Tom,

Thanks for the id. That is definitely the one. I hate not knowing what something is.

These guys were teeny tiny and had to get there likeness on a windy day...not easy. Fortunately, they seemed a little preoccupied with what they were doing....

Bumblebee mimic and snack

Caught this bumblebee Robberfly mimic munching on a damsel. You can approach them easily when they have a meal like this.

A calapittar, a Hassgropper, and a hisser

Took over 500 pics from last weekend with some real nice ones, but will take me a while to process them. I give you three more from my trip of a couple weeks ago. The first one is just a caterpillar (my daughter called them calapittars when she was young). I liked the simplicity of how it turned out...
