Welcome Carl! Small world...I'm from Victoria as well. My interest is in exploring anything that will fit under my recently acquired microscopes when I can find some spare time. I have a shop down at 536 Herald St. (Studio 201 Furniture) and I'm working on another one at the moment so never enough f...

Diatom Life Cycle?

In a recent sample from one of my jars of marine water I found a large concentration of what I think are diatoms. There were many of them but pictured below are just a couple to explain my question. Most were very similar but some seemed to look like 2 diatoms back to back and I wondered if this was...

Now that looks like a neat little arrangement! I have a list of stuff I want to order from the Canadian site for Carolina and I'm going to add several of those. It has me thinking too about how I can make my own with a larger capacity than the 5ml that it says these will hold. It would be nice to ad...

Thanks for the clarification on the creatures Ken! ...and sorry about exceeding the 3 image limit. Thanks for that heads up on that as well.
Yes, I believe it was the SteadyPix. I think this might be worthwhile investment!

Great Photo Ken! When I first began to see all these amazing things under the microscope I quickly figured out the facination everyone has with photographing it. Not knowing what I'm doing and not having equipment other than my regular Digital camera (Canon G2 Powershot) I got desperate and just sta...

Ken, I drifted away for awhile and popped back to have a look around and was thrilled to see the new Beginners Forum! Thanks for all the effort! I definitely fit into the Beginner dept but have the priviledge of living around lots of bodies of water including the Pacific Ocean so after gathering a t...

So now after being so negative in my resoponse to the above, you may ask yourself..."well what good is this guy going to be in a new members forum?" Quite the opposite Ken! That little post just provided me with some good info. For example I've already made a trip to the Protist Information Server ...

I really think it's a good idea to give some thought to what is the overall purpose of the forums but if you all decide that there is a place here for members at all levels of expertise then I say go for it. Keep it simple. Just one forum that invites and encourages those just taking up the hobby or...

Much to my delight, the camp idea was picked up again for summer 2006 for six sessions! I already have several “veteran” kids planning to return so they can expand upon their adventures! Now that's what I can "doing something about it". This is just the kind of thing that is needed to stimulate int...

Outstanding reply! Thanks!
I have seen that there is "high" viscosity and "low" viscosity immersion oil. Any idea what the difference would be and how much it matters? Also what is the typical magnification best suited for observing this type of subject?

A Real Beginners Question....

OK, so I've got the microscope...a Lieca ATC 2000 with 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x(oil) objectives. I also live near a pond and in Victoria, B.C. (lucky me!) so it is warm enough to scoop up water samples. I know there are tons of cool things living there so... Do I just drop some water on a slide, drop o...

Here's a tip on finding some of these books at a better price for those on a tight budget and who do not necessarily need a perfectly new copy. Try www.abebooks.com . You can pick up a used copy of How to know Protozoa for as little as $8.75 a copy plus shipping (as of today). There are probably lot...

The first thing I would say is thanks for creating this forum and providing access to the combined experience of all the senior members. That said here are my views on the current state o...
