Feather Duster

Pictured is a marine "feather duster" worm. It probably belongs to the genus Sabella . It lives in a flexible tube built with mucus and sand, that projects a couple of inches above the sand. The tube diameter is about 3 mm. http://www.pirx.com/gallery/albums/worms/fduster05.jpg Sony DSC-V1 with inve...

Baby horseshoe crab

Recently I had an opportunity to observe a development of the one of the most amazing animals: the horseshoe crab ( Limulus polyphemus ). They are big (often 2 feet long) animals that resemble prehistoric trilobites (they evolved a little in the last 250 million years). The horseshoe crabs are commo...

Graham, this is a great darkfield capture, nice contrast! I agree - I have noticed this movement of the crystals in the cell tips. Also, there is a related article on Miscape Magazine: Video Gallery: Time-lapse of crystals in the desmid Closterium (by Jean-Marie Cavanihac)

Wow, what a detailed picture, decent resolution and perfect exposure ! It's amazing :-)

I wonder what is the other organism in the upper left, a small diatom perhaps?

Ken, thank you ! :-) But your Oxytricha (or Stylonychia :?:) picture is much nicer than any of my Oxytricha photography attemps (therefore I'm not showing them  ). I find that these subjects are much easier to photograph when they are not moving. I noticed that the one I suspect to be Stylonyc...

Great picture, Ken! Very sharp, nice capture of these fast swimmers. It could be Oxytricha, I agree. It should have a flexible body, though, Stylonychia is more rigid. Also, the three caudal cirri are quite prominent in Stylonychia: my Stylonychia picture (I hope it is Stylonychia, I mean). I'm not ...
