Sue and Paul: looks like I will be up against stiff competition; no worries, I have a lot to learn, and will be a while before I can tell my ant story. Paul: Thanks for pointing out your article: excellent stuff. I do indeed from time to time use masking tape and tissues or paper towels for diffusio...

A fly

http://www.math.auckland.ac.nz/~hafner/macro/fly3.jpg I wanted to shoot ants on my dining room floor - of course I realise that I can't compete with some of you on that subject matter, but sooner or later I will tell you about my ants... Anyway, just as I was ready to throw in the towel, a fly land...

Strange things can happen on the way to shoot birds, Sue! But good on you for recognising an opportunity and letting yourself be distracted from your original intentions. Clean background, and beautiful capture of a somewhat battle-worn individual with character. Sorry, can't help with ID. Good shoo...

There is a bit too much shade (for my liking) in a dominant part of the frame, though. And maybe you could have captured more oomph by incorporating the centre of the flower...

Precision work on the framing there, Paul. Nice and sharp, and gorgeous patterns. I like it a lot.

Very nice shot, Daryle. Like most, I am intrigued by the pattern in the eye. Is it 'real', or is it an artefact (flash meeting the hexagonal mosaic of the composite eye)?

Good to hear that you have recovered from your pneumonia.

Best wishes,

Congratulations Sue, this is a beautiful image and a wonderful welcome on the front page! Danny, don't you y'all have some lizards in NZ? Not as colorful as ours, I'm sure, :P but they must have their charms, eh? Well, here is (part of) a lizard from down under: http://www.math.auckland.ac.nz/~hafne...

http://www.math.auckland.ac.nz/~hafner/macro/fluffy2.jpg Gardeners don't like this sap-sucking creature, the nymph of the passion vine hopper, affectionately known as 'fluffybum'. These insects sit quietly on leaves, in colonies, and often with some empty shed skins of earlier instars still attache...
