Have a look at some Lophopidae species, for example the image on the Thaibugs page has a head just like this one. The reflective 'eye' spot in the present image need not be any eye at all, noting that there are similar spots at the ends of the wings. Interesting beastie, thanks for posting, gunn.

Nice capture of a beautiful creature, Rey.
Looks like an exotic version of leaf hopper. I have posted shots of our local (NZ) variety here and here.

I love the patterns on the wing, and the bg sets it off beautifully.

BUT the thing that surprises me is that the glass-stains are almost gone. the settings are quite the same. 1/125, f5.6, iso800. and taken within a minute apart. Must be gunn's miracle glass cleaner! "Stains gone in a minute - no elbow grease required!" But more likely the reduced DoF blurs the stai...

Thanks Paul. So NZ is also a termite free area. :) Well, that's what I thought, but on searching the web I found that we have just declared victory in a battle against Australian invaders: http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA0505/S00139.htm And it appears that there are 3 (harmless, do I need to say i...

nursery web spider

Image

I think this is a male nursery web spider (dolomedes minor). It used to live in the lower parts of the agave, but has moved on.

That is sooo delicate, Sue, with that translucent appearance. I can live with the DoF, and you are spot on in the face, where it really matters.

Eye-popping stuff there, gunn, an amazing perspective on the optical equipment of a moth.

Nice follow-up from your previous image, Lee. Is it the combination of colours and/or the slender shape of the beastie, probably both, that makes this very special. And thanks for pointing out the spider. :)

Nice profile shot, Sue. I am always intrigued by the hexagonal pattern on compound eyes: is it there if one observes without flash or other harsh illumination? The image is also a nice study in DoF (or its absence) with a clearly delineated zone on the ground (and, alas, the fly did not quite know w...

Interesting shot, Péter. I have never seen live termites. I have browsed the web a bit, and it appears that these are nasute termites. The soldiers squirt a sticky smelly substance from their snout.

A beautiful catch on another early morning expedition! Lovely pearls of dew, great composition and background, and a beautiful subject, weighed down with loads of water. The big drop is the icing on the cake.

Neat image, Sue, great detail. With so much fur and those baroque antennae he/she should be a moth, but thanks to Danny and Tom we now know better. I followed Tom's link, shuddering at the reference to sandflies - pass the DEET quick, shut down the display, spray the room...

Sorry, Tom, I can't reply in Latin :)
Nice presentation and an interesting looking creature in its environment. I like the composition, pity that the DoF did not extend to the head.
