Sun animalcule

http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/Hel4001.jpg I believe this is a sun animalcule (Heliozoan) but I don't have an ID. I've just started to play around with phase contrast and this was a subject where it really made a difference compared to brightfield illumination. 40X objective, 2.5X photo-ey...

Conochilus unicornis (Rousselet, 1892)

http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/IMG_4340.jpg This rotifer colony was one of the most enjoyable subjects I've observed. This particular view makes me think of a bunch of people with bad hair singing a song. Good view of the 2 eyespots and internal structures, including eggs. 20X objective wi...

Piotr, Yes, I believe you are correct. I had taken some pictures that were almost definitely Lacrymaria the day before from the same sample of water. There are some similarities... but Litonotus it does appear to be! Thanks for the correction and help. (I modified the subject header to reflect the p...

Floscularia ringens (rotifer)

http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/for_limn.jpg The pond I frequent was just loaded with these rotifers this spring and early summer. They build these beautiful reddish tubes with small "balls" that they roll in a "socket" on top of their heads. I used Rheinberg illumination with electronic fl...

Litonotus (originally mis-identified as Lacrymaria)

Image

With necks that stretch like rubber bands, almost constant motion, and nearly transparent... these Lacrymaria are a challange.

Green Hydra and water flea

http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/for_5383.jpg I watched this hydra catch and swallow one water flea. (It can be seen in the "bulge") Before the first one was completely swallowed, it had latched onto another water flea. I continued to watch... curious what would happen, but this second water...

Graham,

This image and the movie are very cool! I would never have expected this result with polarized light and this subject. Keep up your experimentation, you get some great shots.

Collotheca (rotifera)

http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/for_0032.jpg These guys have frustrated me. They are so incredible to see under the microscope, but I find them difficult to portray in a photograph. They are very "3-dimensional" and transparent, and for photography it's critical how the subject is positione...

Testate amoeba (tight shot)

http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/for_0573.jpg I was up at Mt. Rainier (about 5500 ft elev) and scooped up a sample from a small stream. Lots of diatoms and quite a few testate amoeba. ....Sorry Tom :-) ..... This is a fairly "tight" shot of the aperture in the test. The circular objects seen...

Flower with water droplet "lenses"

Image

Taken with a 50mm f1.8 lens reverse mounted on bellows. The droplets act as small lenses imaging another flower just behind the subject.
