Ruby Beach, Olympic Nat'l Park, WA
Ruby Beach is one of the Pacific Ocean beaches that are part of Olympic National Park. Located along Route 101 just north of Kalaloch. It features some noteworthy "sea-stacks", and tide pools can be explored with a good low tide. While most people naturally "focus" toward the sea, I also like to pho...

What can you say, it's just a great place! My favorite time is the fall. It's an easy location to "work" as well. It can be as strenuous or easy as you wish. No lack of picture opportunities either way. The town of Springdale makes a good "base" if you are not into camping. http://www.photomacrograp...

Since we cover both "macro" and "micro" it may be worth pointing out that the difficulties you experienced in macro "field" work are almost all non-issues when this camera is set up properly on a microscope. I very rarely even look through the viewfinder, and the LCD panel info is feed to a separate...

Thanks guys! Steve... I was actually going to mention the point you made. That was actually what I found most interesting in this scenario. These larva were mixed right in the middle of the grouped aphids. The aphids would be nestled right up against them, sometimes even crawling over them as they d...

Aphids for breakfast, lunch and dinner...
A cherry tree in my yard has some leaves that are curled up and infested with aphids. But the predators are moving in. I don't know what this larva is (likely a midge, fly or wasp of some kind) but there are now a goodly number mixed in with the aphids. The top shot gives an "overall" view of a larv...

If flies understood traffic signs.....
...you might see something like this... http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/fly_sign.jpg OK so it's a a bit silly, but any fly that comes into contact with those small red "trigger hairs" on this Venus flytrap won't be laughing! The plant produces a necter to attract potential victims. T...

It's a long shot, but worth a try. Go to this page: http://www.microscopy.com/cgi-bin/ReadPrintEmailHTML.pl?filename=0411.txt There's a fellow here with an Ergolux and he is looking for a parts manual. It appears he has been in touch with Leica and is getting one. If the address is still valid, an e...

Edwin... these are great!
Even at microscope magnifications the backswimmer is particularly photogenic, especially the swimming legs.

David... there were collected in West Seattle, on some rocks on the public boat ramp on Alki Point. It was DIC with an Olympus 10/0.40 D Apo. It was made with Helicon Focus and a relatively small "stack" of 10 images. I set up, and looked at, quite a few specimens before I had one that was nicely ar...

Rotifer "Baby-on-Board"
A while ago I was photographing a very active rotifer and noticed that when it moved it's body (and "innards") in a certain orientation I could very clearly see a large "baby" rotifer complete with eyespots and corona of cilia.

Pine siskin (Carduelis pinus) feather detail
Feathers are a subject I would like to explore more with the microscope. There are so many interesting patterns and "abstract" images to be found. This image is detail from the base of a Pine siskin feather near the quill.

Marine diatoms attached to Polysiphonia
Going through some photos from a month or two ago, I came across this arrangement of diatoms found in a salt water sample.
