3 wild and crazy looking rotifers

Been an interesting two or three weeks... ... built in microscope light died ](*,) ... lost a drive with about 4 gigs of new pictures on it :-({|= ... needed a sudden root canal :( (think Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man  ... let's hear it for Vicoden and Percocet!) But hey!... the sun is shini...

Love the composition, they posed nicely for you. Oblique is such an underutilized lighting method, and I don't know why... the results almost always look better than straight brightfield.

Wonderful Frez. I particularly like the shots with the "balanced" transmitted/EPI-fluor combinations. Too often with EPI-fluor the context of what you are seeing can sometimes be confusing... but this works great.

This is great Gerd. I was totally puzzled by these when I posted this: http://www.photomacrography1.net/forum/ ... php?t=4131 , but this sequence is very informative. Very well done!

Very similar to the pollen of fir trees in appearance (which are in abundance here in the PNW). Like others, I found it in my water samples and wondered what it was for a long time. It is interesting how immersion oil can "clear" the color of pollens.

More live marine diatoms

Two more shots from the saltwater sample I took a few days ago. I liked the "setting" of the top image... diatoms attached to other diatoms. The lower image is a close look at the connection between two Rhabdonema (thanks Wim for the ID!). It was taken with the 100X. The DIC prism I have for 100X is...

nice looking heliozoan. (Acanthocystis?)

I come across heliozoans regularly, but usually they are placed amid all sorts of debris and clutter, or look a little beat-up. This one was particularly "photogenic".

Wim... this works impressively well! Do I understand correctly... you rotated the condenser aperture slightly to either side of "center", so that in effect you had oblique from "left" and then from "right"?

Some marine diatoms

Been away for awhile, but I recently grabbed some saltwater samples from Puget Sound to have a look. Tide was out so I also picked up a bit of a delicate alga growing on rocks. The alga proved quite interesting and productive, as many diatoms had attached themselves to the fine "branches". The first...

So that's what's causes those galls!

So... is the 2.5X recently added to your arsenal? How do you like working with it versus the Meiji stereo?

This shot also "opens up" nicely with a simple "levels" adjustment. I think Photoimpact has that... you might want to take a look and see.

Really nice Wim. It's always fun to see what the image will look like when you use electronic flash on these since the motion is so rapid you can't really see it with the eye through the microscope.

Rene, it really works well for me if I "switch" left and right in Photoshop and view as a cross-eyed pair. The depth of these diatoms can make it tricky to portray them in a single picture... your technique is quite effective!

Don't know Gerd. The solitary cell and color and texture make me think it's Chlorophyta.... maybe Neospongiococcum of some type.

Graham... sounds like (and looks like!) a nice objective. Good job on the "home-made" phase condenser...I always enjoy your clever equipment implementations.

Bernhard.... I hope you don't mind my altering the color balance your image, but I did a quick "balance" to try and make the background white (or at least neutral). http://www.photomacrography1.net/images/whitebalan.jpg What "modest picture programm" are you using? Most should allow you to correct s...
