How the Nikon iTTL flash system works with Nikon flashes and the macro lights R1 & R1C1:-

Note:- in this case "wireless" does not mean a radio controlled system, but an optically controlled one that has no wires to the flashes.

You can scatter flashes around to light macro subjects and even their backgrounds using full integrated TTL control without needing any wires.

Other makers like Canon have similar macro flash set-ups but I don't know if they are controlled in the same manner?
