Levyne Crystal...

Post by crocoite »

Levyne is an uncommon member of the zeolite group of minerals and occurs in cavities in basalt rock. It is a calcium sodium silicate for those that are interested. The crystal is a little over 3mm across.

Looks to be pretty delicate Steve. Wonder how long it takes for something like this to form. An excellent photograph. :D

Thanks. It will break if you press on it but it's not too delicate. You can hit the basalt with a hammer and not damage these crystals that are within cavities. Many of these types of minerals form from the crystallisation of hot fluids. Some will take months, some years to form.
