Night Macro, Hand-Held

Post by Bald Eagle »

I had no idea Crab Spiders were so predatory. This one was taken Hand-Held, spotted by flashlight, Manual Focus, Manual settings, ISO of 400, 1/125, f22. with my 5D and a Sigma 150 Macro lens with a 20mm Ext. Tube, using a 580 EX flash on Ettl- +2/3. hope you like.

Well spotted and well shot! :D

Is that another spider that the crab has?

They are well known for grabbing butterflies and the like, but I don't think I've seen one with another spider before.

Thanks very much Rik, yes, it actually has a small Orb Spider in its jaws, I actually have another shot, taken 2 days ago with another Crab spider with a Lynx spider as its prey. First time I'd seen this kind of predation as well, now I've seen it twice in two days. :D  :D

I guess it goes to show that we humans aren't the only ones who prey on our own kind. Quite an unusaul shot there Rick and a good job of it too being that it is night, hand held and with a flashlight. :D

Excellent shot at nigth using flashlight and hand held (with 1/125sec), like how the spider blends in with the flower, wonderful detail :D :D

Thank you very much for your kind words Danny, Night Macros(in my backyard) seem to be easier in a way. Everything seems to move at a slower pace. It opens up yet another side to the Macro World. :D :D :D

Nice capture. Spiders do prey on their own kind (jumping spiders are good for this). I have an image of a crab spider taking down a white sulfur butterfly. They are aggressive.
