What I try to do is to keep a freshwater sample on hand from where I took the originals and keep it aerated. However you can use distilled water from the grocery. Make sure it has not had minerals added to it for flavoring, as some do. :D

Hi,

I have several cultures in 2.5 gallon tanks which I keep covered with glass to reduce evaporation, but I do maintain the water level by adding small quantities of purified water from the grocery store from time to time. It is generally stated that it is purified by reverse osmosis. It seems to work fine.
