Yet another way to get 3:1 or more

Post by Edwin Bont »

Another test to get 3:1 or more
I want to make portraits of ants so I need 3:1.
Like this one i did last summer http://members.lycos.nl/eddysign/Macro/luizen1.jpg
For that shot I used a 100mm + reversed 50mm.
The downside is that the workingdistance is very small, just 2cm.

So I am searching for another way to get 3:1
I tested with a 2x converter + 36mm extension tube + 100mm
Workingdistance is too big (15cm) it is realy hard to find the bug.
Contrast and sharpnes is ok, not realy good.
Besides that, it is realy dark trough the viewfinder.

So I did another test today.
2x converter + 85/1.8 + reversed 50mm.
Workingdistance is 4 to 5cm, contrast and sharpness is good.
Its bright in the viewfinder and that helps a lot.
I think that this wil be the winning combination for me (untill I test a MP-E65?)

For this one I used a 35/2 as reversed lens.
Magnification almost 5:1

If it is stuff you already have and you don't do that much 3:1 shooting, sounds like a good way to go! The MP-E-65 sure is convenient, though!
