Merismopedia elegans

Post by micron »

This is a picture of the algae Merismopedia elegans. According to my handy reference “Freshwater Algae of the United States” – “The regular arrangement of cells in a colony results from the fact that successive cell divisions are at right angles to another and in two planes. Small colonies are usually perfectly flat; larger colonies [such as this one], although one cell in thickness are usually more or less bent or distorted.” This came from a culture obtained from a local university.

I like the way the out-of-focus background gives it a feeling of depth. Beautiful image.

Very nice image Ron, gives a really good "sense" of this algae.
